Limited Status/Second Baccalaureate Students

Limited Status
Students who have already earned a bachelor's degree but wish to complete additional undergraduate coursework for a specific and clearly defined purpose may do so by entering the University of California, Riverside (UCR) as "Limited Status." An example of Limited Status would be the student who has already earned a bachelor's degree and wants to pursue a series of courses to apply toward a different career objective. Students cannot earn a bachelor's degree through Limited Status.

Second Baccalaureate
A student who has already earned a bachelor's degree but wishes to pursue a second undergraduate degree should apply to the University as "Second Baccalaureate." An example of Second Baccalaureate would be the student who has a bachelor's degree in Biology but wants to pursue a second degree in Physics. Students may not pursue a second baccalaureate in the same discipline as any prior undergraduate or graduate degree.

Applications for Limited Status and Second Baccalaureate Status are reviewed by the CNAS Student Academic Affairs Office. Students who are admitted to either status will be held to an academic contract to fulfill their degree objectives.

Important Considerations for Limited Status and Second Baccalaureate Admission:

  • Students should have completed the lower-division prerequisites for the proposed area of study. Remaining lower-division prerequisite courses may be taken at the community college when available.
  • Performance in all previous coursework is considered by graduate or professional schools admissions. Your past college record and your Limited Status or Second Baccalaureate record should meet or exceed the 3.30 grade point average required by most graduate programs and 3.50 for most professional schools.
  • Course enrollment priority goes to current UCR students who are pursuing their first bachelor's degree. UCR will not admit students whose Limited Status or Second Baccalaureate degree plans include courses that are currently over-enrolled.
  • Limited Status or Second Baccalaureate enrollment should not exceed a total of two years or six quarters.

How to Apply for Limited Status or Second Baccalaureate Admission:

  • Complete the UC Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships. Be sure to check the appropriate applicant category: Limited Status or Second Baccalaureate.
  • Use the Personal Statement to clearly state your academic objectives. A minimum of 12 units is considered necessary for some programs. Indicate any circumstances which would prevent you from attending full time, but not less than two courses.
  • The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will determine your eligibility and then refer your file to the CNAS Office of Student Academic Affairs for further evaluation and recommendation.
